In May 2013 I was delighted to receive an invitation from Comely Park Primary School in Falkirk to become their Patron of Reading. Naturally I accepted, and I am really looking forward to sharing my love of books and reading with the pupils and teachers at my special school!
This space on my blog will be devoted to communicating with the Comely Park kids, and I hope they will make good use of it. I’m sure I’ll have lots to report here, and we can have some great conversations!
I am looking forward to meeting you and reading your books.
From Mrs Gallivan
Hello, Mrs Gallivan! I’m really looking forward to my visit to Comely Park Primary at the end of June. It will be great to meet everyone and get a tour of the school. Hope to see you then!
Hello Lynne!
We are P4/4 from Comely Park primary and we are really excited to have you as our Patron of Reading. This year we made a class picture book in both English and Scots – and we would like to share it with you when you come to visit us in June. (Miss Lucas has been making us work very hard.. but it’s been fun!)
from P4/4
Hello Miss Lucas’s class! It’s lovely to hear from you, and I’m looking forward to meeting you and looking at your bilingual picture book. I’m very impressed! You will have to teach me some Scots words when I visit in June. See you then!
Hello Lynne
We are P4/3 (our teachers are Mrs. Monteith and Mrs. Duncan) and we are really happy that you are our Patron of Reading! We like to read Horrid Henry, Beastquest, The Famous Five and lots of other books. In school we have been enjoying an online digital book called Inanimate Alice with Miss Lucas – it is really exciting!
We are looking forward to meeting you in June.
from P4/3
Hello P4/3 (and Mrs Monteith and Mrs Duncan)! I’m glad you’ve found my Patron of Reading page so we can chat. I’m really looking forward to meeting you in June and it will be great to hear all about the books you’re reading. My son LOVED Horrid Henry when he was younger, and he was very good at reading it aloud with lots of expression. I’m glad to hear you are all such enthusiastic readers already! Being your Patron of Reading is going to be fantastic, I can tell!
Hi Lynne I am Jude from p4/4 at Comely park primary school and I can’t wait to see you see you soon.

Hi Kelsey – wow, it’s great having so many messages! It will be lovely to meet you and talk about the books you love and all your hobbies. I used to love art too, and I got quite good at handstands but I never mastered the “walkover.” Can you do that?
Hi Lynne i’m Blair at p4/4 at Comly Park. See you soon!
Hi Blair – thanks for writing! See you in June.
Hi Lynne yes I can do a walkover!
Wow – I’m impressed! You must be a great gymnast, Kelsey!
This is a wonderful opportunity for the children at Comely Park to further develop their love of reading and books. I am looking forward to meeting Lynne and have been enjoying exploring her website.
Hi Lynne
I can’t believe how excited the pupils (and staff) are about you coming to visit. I am really pleased the P4 pupils have taken the opportunity to contact you.
Regards,
Mrs. Thomson
Thanks for your comments Mrs Jamieson and Mrs Thomson. I’ve been delighted to have such a warm welcome before I’ve even arrived at Comely Park! You’ve already made me feel like a celebrity! It will be lovely to meet you all in June.
Lynne can you tell me what’s your favourite book that you wrote and your favourite book that you didn’t.
Hi Kelsey – my favourite book that I wrote is “Pink!” because it was inspired by my daughter and because I have made it into a musical. My favourite other book is “Charlotte Sometimes” by Penelope Farmer, about a girl who goes back in time to the First World War, swapping places with a girl her own age every other night.
Thank you very much foo
Sorry about that I was meant thank you so much for calling me a great gymnast.
HI Lynne what made you want to be an author. Also your chapter book about japan looks good!
Hi Ciaran – I’ve always loved writing stories and used to illustrate them as well when I was young. I’ve had lots of different jobs but writing for children is the best one! I’m not sure which chapter book you mean, as I haven’t written one about Japan. I did write about Japan in this blog, though – just look in “Have you read…” below for “Return to Japan.”
I like Bob.
Hi Blair – is Bob a character in a book? All I can think of is Bob the Builder… You’ll have to let me know which Bob you mean!
hi Lynne I’m Ben from p4/3 do you know anything about space I know loads I really like reading I like Mr gum . p.s will we get a free singed book?. thank you for your time hope we will have a great conversation
Hi Ben – great to hear from you! We have an excellent book about the 1969 Moon landing (when I was 7 years old). I can bring it to show you when I come to the school in June. I don’t know that much about space so I’m sure you can teach me a lot! I will definitely bring a copy of all my books for the school library and I would be happy to sign them! See you soon…
It was just a random name I thought of.
Hi Blair – I like thinking up names when I’m writing stories. It helps me if I have a character with lots of personality to start off with. I like the name Willow.
cHi Lynne I am Adam from p 4/3 I am realy excited that you are going to be our patron of reading . I am looking forward to seeing you at comely park and I like all of your books and poems . Yours sincerely Adam Reid .
Hi Adam – nice to meet you! It will be lovely to come to the school in June and meet everyone properly. I feel as if I know you already!
Sorry about the mistake .

Hello Lynne
I am Tamsin from P2/9. I write poems and songs and one of them is called Friends.
I love books and I am reading The Shock for the Secret Seven and James and the Giant Peach at the moment. Do you like Enid Blyton and Roald Dahl? I would like to read one of your books.
Hello, Tamsin Gold – do you know that’s a great name for a book character! I’m glad to hear you write poems and songs, as I do too. Well, I’ve only just started writing songs, as I made my book Pink! into a musical recently. When I come to visit your school I hope you’ll sing your Friends song for me.
I must admit I’ve never read Enid Blyton but I love Roald Dahl. My favourite is Matilda. When I was your age I read Nancy Drew Mysteries. She was a teenage detective and was very clever at solving crimes.
It’s going to be so much fun talking about books with all of you! See you soon!
My favourite books are Matilda and the BFG. It will be nice to see you if you come to P2/9. I like your poem Look It’s Geraldine because it was funny.
Hi Tamsin – I hope when I come I’ll get to meet EVERYONE! I’m really looking forward to having a tour of the school and getting to see all the work you’re doing and the books you’re reading. It’s not long now…

Hello Lynne, I’m Edwin Walker from p2/9. I’ve written four books but I think my best one is The Panther of Airdrie. I like to read Enid Blyton books. The ones I like best are about the Famous Five. I also like to read fact books and I have just finished Alice Through the Looking Glass. I haven’t read any of your books yet but I am going to try to find some soon. I’m looking forward to meeting you.
Hi Edwin – it’s great to hear you are not only a strong reader but also a writer! I hope you’ll bring your own books in to school to show me. I can bring one that I wrote and illustrated when I was a child too. Maybe you’ll become a writer when you grow up, just like I did!
My dad is going to scan The Panther of Airdrie and I’m going to write it out again so that the words are spelled right. I will bring in the first copy and the new copy. I would like to see the one that you wrote when you were little.
from Edwin
Hi Edwin – that’s great! I am looking forward to reading The Panther of Airdrie when I come to see you. My book is called Princesses and Pirates and it’s about two little girls playing dress-up. I can’t remember how old I was when I made it. See you very soon!
Hello Lyne this is Logan from primary 4/4. I like to write and sometimes illustrate books of my own. I haven’t read any of your books yet but I would like to. I was looking at one of your books called pink and I think my little brother would enjoy reading it.
Hi Logan – nice to hear from you! Maybe you can bring your illustrated books to show me as well. I think my visit will have to last a whole day so I can talk properly with everyone who has written to me!
Hi Lynne, My name is Oliver and I’m from primary 2/9. I wrote a book about Ben 10. I love to read at bedtime and would like to read one of your books!
Lovely to hear from you, Oliver! I’m glad to hear you’re a keen reader. When I come to your school at the end of the month we can chat all about what you like to read. See you then!

Hi Abby and Jessica – thanks for writing! Sorry I was slow to answer. I’ve had a busy Saturday! I like to read books that are funny (mostly) and sometimes sad. I spend a lot of time reading picture books as well, to see what other authors and illustrators are doing. There are some really great ones out there!
I am looking forward to your visit. I have enjoyed speaking to you and it has made me decide to write another panther book.
Hi Edwin – that is excellent! I am glad I inspired you to write another panther book. Soon you will have a whole series! Do you draw pictures for them as well? Maybe you will be an author one day.
HI lynne i am amy from p4/3 i am so looking forward to seeing you on your vist .
Hi Amy – I am really looking forward to it too! It will be great to actually meet you all in person, and hear all about the books you like to read and the stories you are writing. See you soon!
Hi Lynne
My name is Anthony and I am in P4/4. I’m really disappointed that I won’t be here to meet you next week when you visit Comely Park, because I’m hopefully going on holiday if my dad gets out of hospital on time. I’m keeping my fingers crossed, but if I don’t go it won’t be so bad because I’ll get to meet you! I like to read lots of different things like The Hobbit and Diary of a Wimpy Kid. What do you like to read when you are on holiday?
Dear Anthony,
I really hope your dad gets out of hospital and you can go on holiday! I will keep my fingers crossed too. Don’t worry if you miss my visit next week – I am sure I can come and visit again before too long. I am very impressed that you can read The Hobbit! I think that is quite advanced for P4! Have a great summer and I’ll see you next term. Happy reading! (I am taking my Kindle on holiday so I can dip into lots of different books).
Hi Lynne,
I just wanted to know what you are looking forward to the most?

Hi Kelsey,
I am looking forward to meeting everyone next week and making the official announcement about who will be the next school Makar. All the entrants for the position wrote excellent poems, and you will have to wait until Thursday to find out who wrote the best one!

Hi Abby,
Thanks for writing! Hmmm… my favourite book when I was little was ‘Gabrielle and Selena’ by Peter Desbarats. You can see pictures from it on this blog if you look down at the Archives list below and choose September 2011. One of those posts is called ‘My favourite book’ and you can read all about it there. Next time I come to your school I can bring the book to show you! Have a great summer and I’ll see you soon!
Hi Lynne!
Thanks for replying to me i just wanted to ask what is your favourite book you wrote?
From
Jessica
Xxxxxx
Hi Jessica –
I love chatting with Comely Park pupils, so thanks for writing! My favourite of the books I have written is probably Pink because it has been my most successful one and it is also a musical. I had a lot of fun writing songs for the musical, and Hopscotch Theatre did a fantastic job bringing the story to life! Which of my books is YOUR favourite?
Hi Lynne!
My favourite book that you wrote is that I will never eat the colour green. Can you give me some tips on writing and publishing books please?
From Jessica in P3/12
Hi Jessica,
I’m glad you like Green. It’s one of my favourites too! If you want to be an author, the best thing to do is read a lot, and write the kind of stories that you enjoy reading. If you have fun with your writing, that will come across to your readers too.
Hi Lynne!
I am really looking forward to seeing you again! My mum is letting me either make my own website or blog and you will obviously be in it! I will tell you what it is called once i have made it. Looking forward to seeing you!
From Jessica in P3 going into P4
Hi Jessica,
I’m looking forward to my next visit to Comely Park too! It won’t be long – maybe August or September. That’s great that you are going to do a blog or maybe a website. I would recommend WordPress as it’s easy to use and there are lots of nice “themes” to choose from (the style and colours and layout of your blog). I chose Wu Wei because it’s simple and easy to read, but there are lots of colourful ones too. Do let me know once it’s up and I can subscribe to your blog! See you soon. xx
Thanks Lynne i will be sure to tell you what it is called and i will use WordPress to make probably them both thanks.
Thanks, Jessica –
Have fun with it and good luck! I look forward to reading it soon…
Hi Lynne
I just wanted to ask how your summer has been and if you have been on any holidays?
See you soon
Jessica xxx
Hi Jessica,
I’ve had a great summer and yes, I’ve been to Croatia (sunny and hot) and just last week to Mull, which was sunny too! I’ve taken lots of pictures of Mull so I plan to blog all about it soon. (You can see my pictures of Croatia if you click on “Croatia joins the EU” below). I hope you’ve had a good holiday too! You can tell me all about it next time I visit.
Hi Lynne!
I am SUPER EXITED about you visiting P4/4 and miss Lucas!
I would like to ask for some tips on writing and publishing a book please?
Your books inspired me and my friends,Millie and Elspeth to write a book on birds related to our topic.
If you can thank you.
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Dear Jessica, Millie and Elspeth,
Thanks for writing! I am looking forward to my P4/4 visit as well, especially since we will be writing a story together. I’m keen to hear all your ideas about Gallus the Craw and his Maw and Paw!
What other birds will you three be writing about? It is a Scottish seabird topic?
The best way to get a book published is to write something totally new that no one else has thought of before (not an easy task). Maybe you can start a trend that everyone will want to copy!
See you soon xxx
Thanks Lynne
I will be sure to tell the girls to try and make a new trend of books.
When we finish the book would it be ok if we send it to you or can i bring it in to to you so you can send it to your publisher and say it was by children aged 7,8 and 9?
If you can thank you xxx
Hi Jessica,
I will be happy to read your book when it’s finished and give you some tips on the publishing business. Normally you have to be at least 17 years old before being published, but there have been a few exceptions to that rule. I didn’t get anything published until I was 42, so you mustn’t be in too much of a rush! Good luck, and I’ll talk to you in a couple of weeks.
Thanks! 🙂
Dear Lynne , no wonder you haven’t replied, been a bit miffed.I’ve made an acrostic poem about Halloween:
Haunted by ghastly ‘creatures’ with so many features
A face mask of makeup an inch thick for effect
Lurking in the shadows, waiting for a victim!
Laughing, tricking, scaring, joking, singing
Oh giant, ghoulish, dangly decorations
Witches, vampires, zombies, ghosts, goblins – crooked!
Everyone has tons of sweets when the night is done
Evil pumpkins have ghoulish, ghastly grins
Naughty skeletons roam the land, looking for a body.
I’m working on one for fireworks night!!! 🙂
Hi Ruby,
I’ve been searching my Patron of Reading pages to see if I’ve missed one of your messages, but I couldn’t find one. Sorry if you’ve been waiting for a reply! I love your Halloween poem, especially the line, “Oh giant, ghoulish, dangly decorations”. That is brilliant!
I am so impressed with the number of budding young authors we have in Comely Park School. From Mrs Gallivan
Dear Mrs Gallivan,
Aren’t they impressive? I was amazed at how many brilliant ideas they came up with during my last visit! We were brainstorming ideas for the Gallus stories and they could have written twenty fantastic stories instead of just two. It’s a real pleasure to be part of it all!
Hi Lynne,
We are all really looking forward to our book launch in 2 weeks!! We’ve been writing poems about our characters out of Castle Catastrophe and illustrations for the potato story. Thank you for giving us lots of great ideas!
Elspeth
Hi Elspeth,
Thanks for writing! The book launch sounds great, and it’s brilliant that you’ve been writing poems as well. I can’t wait to see the finished books and all your potato illustrations!
Hi Lynne
I hope your having a good time! Today’s onesy day at school, i’m wearing my pink panther onesy!!!
Elspeth
Hi Elspeth,
Onesy day! That sounds fun – are the teachers wearing them too? My daughter has a onesy that is very cosy for sleeping. It looks a bit Christmassy because it’s a sort of burgundy colour. I hope you have a great day in your pink panther onesy!
Hi lynne
Some of the teachers were wearing onsy’s!!!
I’ve started making a story. The main character is Mo the robot. I have started making illustrations for it.
Elspeth
Hi Elspeth,
Your story about Mo the robot sounds intriguing. Is he a nice robot or a mean one? Next time I come to see you I hope you can show me some of it. I wonder what colour Mo will be…
Hi Lynne
We think your books are really funny especially the potatoe story!!!!!
Zoe & Sam
Hi Lynne
We are Primary 2/12 and we are looking forward to meeting you. We have been writing stories about Dragons. Do you have any ideas of what would make a good story?
Thank you,
Primary 2/12
Hello Primary 2/12!
Lovely to hear from you! I am looking forward to meeting you too, and it will be great to hear some of your dragon stories. I am currently writing a story about a baby crocodile, and that is a little bit like a dragon!
I would suggest thinking first about your dragon and his or her appearance and personality. Green, red, blue, orange, small and spiky, large and fluffy, sweet and gentle or terribly naughty? Give your dragon a name that suits his or her looks and personality. Then think to yourself, what sort of trouble can my dragon get into? A good story always has a problem that has to be solved. Maybe your dragon has a best friend who can help solve the problem. Always give your story a happy ending.
Good luck with your writing and I’ll see you soon!
Lynne x
Hi Lynne
Thank you for your great ideas. We have decided to write a fabulous dragon story just for you.
Primary 2/12
That’s brilliant – I will look forward to reading it when you’re ready to share it with me. We can put it up on the blog!
Dear Lynne , so sorry I haven’t been in touch lately! I am typing the book that I made at the start of the year with Katy and Sarah. We have also started another one called Ms McClarty’s Adventures through Time and Space! Did you hear that Miss Lucas is leaving for two years? She is sharing her Gaelic with other adults and the government! When will you be paying me a visit next?
My illustrators and I made Miss Lucas a card with our book characters on the front and a short Makar poem inside, wishing her the best of luck.
Hi Ruby,
It’s great to hear from you! Your Ms McClarty’s Adventure stories sound fantastic – and well on their way to becoming a series! I’m looking forward to seeing them next time I come. Yes, Miss Lucas told me her news about moving to Education Scotland for two years. That is in Glasgow (where I live) so I am hoping to meet up with her for a chat once she settles into the new job. I will definitely miss her, as I’m sure you all will too, but now Miss McGrow in P2 will be my Patron of Reading contact. She and her P2 class are writing a dragon story in preparation for my next visit! I hope that will be in March sometime, but we haven’t got a date yet. I will let you know, as it will be great to catch up and see what you’ve been writing!
Dear Lynne, it’s great to hear from you. I hope Miss Lucas pops in for a wee coffee and a chat. March would be great, I can’t wait for then. I will ask Mrs Collins what my next official Makar job is. After my friends and I have completed our current book, we will write one about our main character’s past.
Bye for now Ruby
Hi Ruby,
I’ll have to email Miss McGrow again to fix a date for my next visit. I can’t wait either! I’m sorry we haven’t properly put up your Makar poems on this blog as I promised, so we must remedy that. I remember you did a Halloween poem, and one for Christmas. Soon it will be Easter, and then Sports Day again! Maybe when I come in March I can get copies of all your poems so I can put them up on the School Makar page. Talk to you soon!
Any time in March would be good. Just send an email and we can arrange a visit. Primary 2 are looking forward to meeting you!
That’s great – I am really looking forward to meeting the P2s as well!
Hi Lynne!
I really enjoyed you visiting us today! I was just wondering if you could create a story about a foster child that lives in the horrible Sunlover Foster Home (it sounds nice but it isnt!).
It would be great if you could!
Many thanks,
Jessica
Hi Jessica,
I had a great time with all the P5s today – thanks for having me! I hope everyone had fun imagining silly-named characters and their adventures. Are you going to write a story about a foster child too? Were you inspired by the Tracy Beaker stories? Tell me more about the Sunlover Foster Home. How horrible is it?
Hello.
Sunlover foster home is owned by Egma Elivi and Edwena Sopu. They both share the same goal, to be evil!!!
Have to go now
Jessica
Hi Jessica,
Those two characters sound particularly evil! There must be a nice character there somewhere. Maybe their long-suffering dog, or their niece (a sort of Cinderella character who has to work really hard). There will be good and bad children in the foster home too, I guess? Just like in Tracy Beaker’s Dumping Ground. Are you going to write a story about the Sunlover Foster Home? I think you should!
Hi lynne!
I just wanted to tell you a bit more about Sunlover foster home because I had to leave for a pantomime! 🙂 The children sleep on hard wooden beds and have 12 hours of school. Their food and drink is bread and water. It’s just all horrible
Hope you get the idea,
Jessica
Hi Jessica,
That sounds like a terrible life! Those poor children! I hope you enjoyed the pantomime. Which one was it? I haven’t been to one of those in a few years. There are always two or three in Glasgow over Christmas. There are big posters about them in the subway these days. Talk to you soon!
Hello again
The panto was really good (and funny!) It was puss in boots. You might of seen posters about it in school. Yes the foster home is horrible! Going to go and play with Abby since we had a sleepover!:)
Bye!
Jessica
Hi Jessica,
Glad to hear you enjoyed the pantomime. I hope you and Abby had a fun sleepover as well. Now I will have to answer her message too!
Hi Lynne sorry I haven’t commented in ages But I was wondering if you could write a story about a dog that gets lost and goes on a crazy adventure with his friend fluffy the cat I would really appreciate it Oh and I loved when you came to vist it was really fun. Got to play with Jessica since we had a sleepover yay.
Abby ❤
Hi Abby,
I’m glad you are all writing to me again! This blog got awfully quiet over the summer. I have written a few stories about dogs – one called Rufus, and one who changed name a few times, from Joanie to Tony to Finlay. I have another story about an animal shelter for both dogs and cats, called Bloggs Dog & Cat Home. It starts like this:
There once was a house where no sensible mouse
would ever be tempted to roam.
It stood high on a hill
(and it towers there still):
the famous Bloggs Dog & Cat Home.
Mrs Delia Bloggs took good care of the dogs
and her daughter Belle managed the cats.
The house was a-flurry
with fluffies and furries,
in baskets, on blankets and mats.
Hi Lynne!
I’m not feeling well today so i’m staying off school but I was wondering if you could give me any story writing tips?
Thanks x
Hi Jessica,
I’m really sorry to hear you’re not well today. I hope you feel better soon so you can get back to school and all your friends! Maybe you could write a story about a girl who is living in Sunlover Foster Home and she finds a way to outsmart the two nasty ladies Egma and Edwena and escape! She could pretend to be sick, put some pillows in her bed and then sneak out the window…
